Background

Organisations have always been social places but the importance of the social relationships between people working in an organisation (social capital) often hasn't been considered.  One reason for this is that we've had little opportunity to manage or even influence these relationships.  This situation has now changed.  The development of web 2.0 and social networking tools has radically transformed our ability to influence the way that peoples' relationships work.

Much of this change is being driven by IT under the title of Enterprise 2.0 (the use of web 2.0 tools within the enterprise).  More recently, people have been talking about the Social Business in an attempt to move the debate off the technology and onto the environment that these tools can help create.

This shift gives HR an enormous new opportunity to be at the centre of what is potentially the biggest change impacting organisations right now (this isn't just my view - it's the belief of many leadings CEOs such as John Chambers at Cisco).  Even from a technology perspective, the biggest challenge moving to Enterprise 2.0 is in culture change.  But the Social Business needs our skills in HR and management processes, organisation design and communication too.

If you're going to take advantage of this opportunity, you need to understand:

-    what the Social Business is and what HR can do to develop it

-    how HR can make best use of web 2.0 itself (eg in social recruitment, social  learning)

-    what social media is - and the best or probably the only way to understand it  fully is to start using it yourself.

Session Outline

This session will focus on these three things:  the social business, HR 2.0 and your use of social media.  The first two hours will feature a presentation on the social business and HR 2.0:

-    The history of the development of web 2.0 tools

-    Why they're important - changing expectations (not just of Gen Y)

-    Current usage, applications, issues and opportunities from both personal and  corporate perspectives

-    Enterprise 2.0 - why it's not just an IT issue

-    The Social Business - things HR can do

-    Social HR - and particularly the use of web 2.0 for:

 • Recruitment (which involves more than just using Linkedin as a jobs board)
 • Onboarding
 • Learning (the informal learning revolution)
 • Career management...

Jon Ingham will discuss case studies and there will be time for answering your questions too.

The third (optional) hour will provide a practical overview of the key social media tools that at a minimum, you need to be aware of, and ideally, be experienced in using yourself - eg blogging (Blogger, WordPress), podcasting (Audioboo, iPadio, Blogtalkradio), microblogging (Twitter) and social networking (Facebook, Linkedin, Xing and Ning) as well as RSS feed readers and any other technologies you want to have explained!

Bring your laptops (with dongles - the club's wireless isn't good), blackberries and iphones to the session and explore these tools yourself as well.

Jon will also provide suggestions for HR blogs, podcasts and tweeple (!) that you can follow.  And he will discuss corporate examples of these technologies, again with case studies of their use.
